Safe Food for Canadians Regulations coming into force on January 15
New requirements will apply to businesses and individuals importing food.
The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) will come into force on January 15, 2019.
Businesses that import food or prepare food for export or to be sent across provincial or territorial borders will need to have licences as well as preventive controls that address potential risks to food safety.
The new consolidated regulations align Canada’s model with internationally accepted best practices for food safety and the globally recognized international food standards.
Following several notices in the past year from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Canada Border Services Agency has issued a Customs Notice to further remind importers of their new obligations and to provide Customs’ views on the matter.
